Little Compton vandal pleads no contest

A Little Compton man charged this summer with cutting trees and other vegetation from a center median at Main and Crandall roads in Adamsville pleaded no contest to the charge against him Friday.

Dana Moniz, 65, of 93 Amesbury Lane, faced a single count of vandalism. As part of his no contest plea in Second Division District Court in Newport, all costs were waived and the case was filed for one year.

Moniz, who planted many of the trees that were cut and once maintained the center median, reportedly cut them in retaliation for what he considered a poor pruning job on the state-owned median, which is maintained by local volunteers.

In an interview with Little Compton police, he admitted cutting the trees and according to police asked “What am I going to have to pay for this?”

Police estimated the damages amounted to $3,866.
