Packed races as Sakonnet candidates declare intent to run for office

Incumbent Democrats Michelle McGaw and Senator Louis DiPalma are running unopposed for their House and Senate seats, respectively

The races for town council and school committee are packed in both Tiverton and Little Compton, where more than 30 candidates declared their intent to run for office by the state’s deadline Wednesday afternoon. On the General Assembly front, one representative and one senator are running unopposed.

Tiverton Town Council

With seven seats open on the non-partisan Tiverton Town Council, candidates include incumbents Denise deMedeiros, Deborah G. Janick, Michael Burk, John G. Edwards V, David Paull and Dennis J. Milbourne. With councilor Jay Edwards not running, the incumbents are being challenged by hopefuls David Perry, John Chelo, Craig Committo, Blake Hayden and Joseph A. Perry, the son of the late councilor of the same name.

Tiverton School Committee

The race for three seats on the non-partisan board includes incumbents Michael C. DeCotis and Diane Farnworth, as well as hopefuls Jennifer Joslyn, Jordan Lee Reilly, Brendon J. Andrade, Kimberly Paquette and Joceyln M. Sherman.

Little Compton Town Council

All five incumbents — Republicans Gary Mataronas, Robert L. Mushen and Paul J. Golembeske, and Democrats Patrick A. McHugh and Andrew Iriarte-Moore, are being challenged by Democrats Victoria Talbot and Martina Halsey, and Republicans Maureen R. Rego and Scott W. Lewis.

Little Compton School Committee

Incumbent Michael William Rocha faces hopefuls Travis D. Snow, an Independent, Republicans Brandon E. Pineo and Democrats Amy L. Gleicher and Susan D. Chase.

Representative races

District 70 Democrat John G. Edwards of Tiverton is running for re-election and is being challenged by Republican hopeful Christopher Borden.

In the District 71 race, incumbent Democrat Michelle McGaw of Portsmouth is running unopposed.

Incumbent District 10 Senator Walter Felag of Warren is running for re-election, and will be challenged by Republican Allyn E. Meyers.

In the District 12 Senatorial race, incumbent Democrat Louis DiPalma of Newport is running unopposed.
