PORTSMOUTH — Fall high school sports got a jump on the start of the academic year, as the Portsmouth High girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, and cross-country teams all faced competition prior to the first day of classes on Wednesday.

If you’d like to root on the home team, here’s a list of PHS and Portsmouth Middle School home games scheduled for September:

Thursday, Sept. 4

6:30 p.m.: PHS varsity football team hosts Rogers (Injury Fund game)

Saturday, Sept. 7

• 1 p.m.: PHS varsity boys’ soccer team hosts Central Falls (JV game at 11 a.m.)

• 3:30 p.m.: Middle school boys’ soccer team plays at the PHS turf field

Monday, Sept. 9

• 4:30 p.m.: PHS girls’ and boys’ varsity cross-country teams host multiple schools at Glen Park/polo grounds

• 6 p.m.: PHS girls’ varsity volleyball team hosts East Providence in the field house (JV game at 4:30 p.m.)

Thursday, Sept. 12

7 p.m.: PHS varsity football team hosts South Kingstown (freshman game hosts Cranston High School West at 4 p.m.)

Friday, Sept. 13

• 4 p.m.: Middle school girls’ soccer team hosts St. Mary Academy Bay View Middle School

• 6 p.m.: PHS girls’ varsity soccer team hosts Chariho High (JV game at 4 p.m.)

• 6 p.m.: PHS girls’ varsity volleyball team hosts South Kingstown (JV game against South Kingstown at 4:30 p.m., freshman match against Classical at 4:45 p.m.)

Saturday, Sept. 14

• 10 a.m.: PHS JV football team hosts South Kingstown

• 6 p.m.: PHS boys’ varsity soccer team hosts Bishop Hendricken (JV game at 4 p.m.)

Tuesday, Sept. 17

6 p.m.: PHS girls’ varsity soccer team hosts Moses Brown (JV game at 4 p.m.)

Thursday, Sept. 19

• 4:30 p.m.: PHS girls’ varsity tennis team hosts Ponaganset

• PHS girls’ varsity volleyball team hosts East Greenwich (JV game at 4:30 p.m.)

Saturday, Sept. 21

• 10 a.m.: PHS JV football team hosts Cranston West

• 1 p.m.: PHS girls’ varsity soccer team hosts Dartmouth

Monday, Sept. 23

• 4 p.m.: PHS girls’ varsity tennis team hosts Barrington

• 4:30 p.m.: PHS girls’ cross-country team hosts multiple schools at Glen Park/polo grounds

• 4:30 p.m.: PHS boys’ cross-country team hosts Moses Brown at Glen Park/polo grounds

• 6 p.m.: PHS girls’ varsity soccer team hosts Pilgrim

• 6 p.m.: PHS girls’ varsity volleyball team hosts La Salle Academy (JV game at 4:30 p.m.)

• 4 p.m.: PHS girls’ tennis team hosts Rogers

• 4:15 p.m.: Middle school boys’ soccer team hosts Riverside

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
