Plans are underway for Portsmouth’s fourth annual Sakonnet Coastal Bike & Stroll

PORTSMOUTH — If John Vitkevich has anything to say about it, Portsmouth’s fourth annual Sakonnet Coastal Bike & Stroll will be the biggest and best-attended bike event Rhode Island has ever seen.

Vitkevich, a member of the Portsmouth Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC), is already making plans for the Saturday, Sept. 19, event in Island Park. With 49 days to go, he has scheduled a meeting with Ray Perry and the town’s Emergency Management Agency for Thursday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m. at Town Hall.

The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon and will offer two miles of car-free, family-friendly fun along the Sakonnet waterfront.

Participants are asked to register at start of the route on Park Avenue. Bring the kids. Bring the dogs. Bring a bicycle, stroller or just a comfortable pair of walking shoes.

There will even be a Kids Chalk Art Zone, with prizes awarded for the best creations. So if your youngster has been waiting for the opportunity to turn a public street into a giant canvas, this could be the big day.

One of the biggest items on Vitkevich’s Aug. 6 agenda will be volunteers. He’s looking for BPAC members who can help out from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the day of the event.

Portsmouth police will also be there, with 12 officers assigned to safety and crowd control.

The event is being presented by the Island Park Coastal Community in conjunction with Bike Newport.

And then there’s the Escape Bridge. Vitkevich has a wish: Get all the bicyclists, walkers and stroller-pushers together on the bridge for a group photo.

He’s also open to suggestions, questions, ideas — and, apparently, costumes.

“Perhaps a costume theme?” he asked in an email to fellow BPAC members.

With 49 days left, there’s still plenty of time to come up with something suitably memorable.
