Patriots down North Kingstown in quarterfinals

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School girls’ basketball team will look to avenge its loss earlier this month to top-seeded Westerly when it takes on the Bulldogs in the semifinals of the R.I. Interscholastic League’s open state tournament tomorrow, March 14.

Tipoff is at noon Saturday at The Ryan Center at The University of Rhode Island.

The fifth-seeded Patriots eliminated fourth-seeded North Kingstown, 45-41, in a quarterfinal game played Thursday night on the fourth-seeded Skippers’ own court.

Portsmouth built a 20-5 lead in the second quarter after going on a 9-0 run and led at halftime, 21-16.

However, the Skippers stormed back and took a 37-30 lead going into the fourth quarter before the Patriots surged late in the game.

Portsmouth had previously beaten North Kingstown in the quarterfinals of the Division I tournament on Feb. 28, 54-47.

The fifth-seeded Patriots got to the quarterfinals by dominating Rogers, 52-28, Monday at Portsmouth High School.

Portsmouth lost to Westerly, the No. 1 seed, earlier this month in the semifinals of the Division I tournament, 48-36.
