Portsmouth kicks off football season with Injury Fund shutout
Patriots shut out Rogers in advance of Thursday’s season opener at home Thursday
PORTSMOUTH — It may have just been an abbreviated Injury Fund contest, but the Portsmouth High School varsity football team showed it’s ready for the official season opener set for Thursday, Sept. 12, at home.
Portsmouth hosted Rogers last Thursday, Sept. 5, an evening that also featured a contest between Middletown and Tiverton.
The Patriots avenged last year’s Injury Fund loss to Rogers as they had no trouble with their island rivals this time around en route to a 19-0 shutout.
Portsmouth, playing in Division I this year, scored on its first drive which ended with an 18-yard touchdown rush by Tristan Conheeney.
Joseph Sanderson and Adam Conheeny also had TD runs, with the former carrying the ball for 50 yards into the end zone.
Portsmouth will host South Kingstown at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12. The Patriots travel to Cranston High School West for a 7 p.m. contest on Friday, Sept. 20.
