The state Department of Environmental Management (DEM) officials are giving prospective partners two more weeks to submit informal plans for the redevelopment of the former Chase Marina on Riverside Drive in Tiverton.
The DEM, which owns the vacant marina, last month gave interested parties until Friday, Sept. 9 to submit ideas for redeveloping the site. But Bob Ballou, assistant to the DEM director, said Monday that DEM received several requests to extend that deadline; they obliged, extending it to Friday, Sept. 23.
"We've received a few responses," he said. "And a few people asked us to give them a little more time, so we were happy to do that."
DEM officials estimate it will cost between $4 and $5 million to redevelop the site, and are looking for partners in a public/private venture to restore and re-open the old marina. DEM would continue to own it into the future, with private sector lessees occupying and caring for the property.
Ballou did not give details on what proposals so far entail, saying this phase of the redevelopment will be kept confidential. Once the project enters the next phase — soliciting and finding a formal partner — proposals will be made public, he said.
DEM sees the redevelopment of the mill as one of three cornerstones in the state's commercial dock facilities holdings, alongside Pier 9 in Newport and the state pier in Galilee.
Of the estimated $4-$5 million cost to redevelop the property, $1.3 would come from state funds, with the rest coming from federal and private sector sources, Ballou said.
