PORTSMOUTH — The R.I. Department Health (RIDOH) is recommending that town-owned Sandy Point Beach be closed to swimming due to high bacteria levels.
Sandy Point is one of four Rhode Island beaches that RIDOH says should be temporarily closed to swimming. The others are the Surfer's Rock Area only at Second Beach in Middletown, Scarborough State Beach-South in Narragansett, and Conimicut Point Beach in Warwick.
This is the first time this season that RIDOH has recommended the closing of Sandy Point Beach, according to its website.
RIDOH will continue to monitor and review beach water quality regularly to ensure safe bathing throughout the summer season. The status of a beach may change as new data become available.
The most up-to-date beach information is available through a recorded message on RIDOH's beaches telephone line (401/222-2751).
