PORTSMOUTH — If the results of an Injury Fund meet over the weekend are any indication, Portsmouth High’s cross-country teams are in for a fine season.

The boys’ and girls’ teams, coached by Evan Denard and Rebecca Braman, respectively, competed at the Injury Fund races on Saturday, Sept 1., in Deerfield Park, Smithfield. Each school across the state competed in four separate 5K races

The PHS boys placed second in their race to Bishop Hendricken, 20 to 52, while the girls took second to Cumberland, 24 to 38.

In the boys’ race, Portsmouth junior Sean Gray placed first with a time of 15:42.80. Sean’s time was the second fastest among all 310 Injury Fund runners on the boys side.

Patriots senior Allie Kaull was the winner in the girls’ race, clocking a time of 18:49.65. Allie’s time was the fastest time of the day for all 200 runners on the girls’ side.

The top seven scoring members on the boys side included: Chris Vachon, 17:06.98, 12th; Patrick Orbon, 17:22.50, 14th; Jack Marston, 17:31.19, 15th; Gavin Braman, 18:02.89, 17th; Caiden McHale, 18:29.25, 22nd; and Drew Forch, 18:45.58, 25th.

For the girls, the top seven also included: Eleni Drosinos, 22:00.17, 10th; Hanalei Streuli, 22:25.69, 12th; Kyra Siebens, 22:48.98, 13th; Reilly Porado, 23:06.05, 14th; Marin Cooney, 23:25.26, 16th; and Addie Dalton, 26:57.03, 32nd.

“This was an excellent race for our boys’ team,” said Denard. “Last year, our team’s average time was 17:54. This year, the average was 17:09. Combining results from all four races, our team placement statewide would have been third overall behind Bishop Hendricken and East Greenwich.”
