Westerly drubs Patriots' softball team, 11-1 in semis
Westerly drubbed the Portsmouth High softball team, 11-1 in five innings, in the Division II semifinals at Rhode Island College on Thursday night, June 6.
The Bulldogs kept the Patriots outfielders busy, clubbing 11 hits and scoring 11 runs off Portsmouth pitcher Mary Rainey, who walked just three batters.
Portsmouth cleanup hitter Maddie Jenkins singled home Kaelyn Mahoney to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead over Westerly in the second inning.
The Portsmouth offense managed just four hits off Westerly pitcher Sophia Valentini, however. Mia Ruggieri collected two of the hits, but was stranded twice.
The Bulldogs scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning, scored two more in the third and two more in the fourth to end the game after the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule.
Westerly catcher Ella Keegan singled home three runs for Westerly. Alex Stoehr singled home two runs, Emma Caracciolo drove in two on a fielder’s choice, Ava D’Ortona singled twice and drove in two runs and Isabella Austin singled and drove in a run.
The 12-6 Patriots beat Scituate 8-4 and shut out Johnston 5-0, before losing their first game to Ponaganset 10-3 in the quarterfinals.
