Defense key in helping Patriots advance to D-2 semifinals on Friday
PORTSMOUTH — Things looked somewhat grim for the Portsmouth Patriots football team Friday night, as visiting East Providence nearly shut the door on their season late in the R.I. Division II quarterfinal contest.
With the Townies already leading 13-7, Portsmouth fumbled the ball on its own 5-yard line, setting up a first-and-goal for East Providence.
The Patriots’ defense kept the Townies from breaking the goal line after three tries, and a short field goal attempt was blocked by Portsmouth’ Tyler Hurd to keep East Providence scoreless.
Later in the game, Evan Tullson intercepted the Townies, which set up a 5-yard TD touchdown run by Shane Harvey to tie the game. George Smith’s successful extra-point sealed the victory for the Patriots.
The Patriots’ other touchdown came in the first half, on a 40-yard run into the end zone by Neal Tullson. Smith’s point-after kick was good. Portsmouth was down 13-0 before Tullson’s run.
Friday’s win propelled Portsmouth into the semifinals, which the Patriots will host against Cranston West on Friday, Nov. 11.
