Alvin W. Norcross, 94, Westport

Alvin W. Norcross, 94, of Westport for the past 32 years, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, after a brief illness. Mr. Norcross was the husband of Charlotte Anne (Guptill), formerly of Cambridge, Mass., and son of the late Nettie (Alexander) Norcross and the late William W. Norcross of Lakewood, Ohio.
Mr. Norcross held a variety of responsible positions in general management and personnel administration in the United Nations, the Federal Government and private industry. After retiring from the Federal Government in 1973, Mr. Norcross worked as a management consultant. He later served with the United Nations as a public administration advisor and project manager in Afghanistan (1976-1980) and in the Republic of Maldives (1982-1984). Following his return from the Maldive Islands, Mr. Norcross was an active member of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) for several years. He was also active in local government, environmental affairs and care for the mentally ill. He served on the Board of Directors as a vice president for the Westport River Watershed Alliance and on the Fall River and Southeast Area Citizen Advisory Boards to the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. He was a member of the Harvard Radcliffe Club of Greater New Bedford.
A graduate of Baldwin Wallace College, Mr. Norcross received his Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University. He was the recipient of several awards for outstanding service during his career and is listed in Marquis’ “Who’s Who in America.” He was a leader in professional organizations and in community affairs when he and his family lived for many years in the Washington, D.C. area. He served in World War II and was a Lt. Col. (Retired) in the Air Force Reserve.
Besides his loving wife, Mr. Norcross is survived by their two children, David Lichty Norcross of Richmond, Va., and Nancy Dayna Norcross of San Diego, Calif.' and two nephews, Frank Norcross and Richard Norcross.
Funeral arrangements are by the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport. Services will be private.
