Two Barrington girls raced on a silver medal-winning boat at the recent USRowing Youth Nationals at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
Lucy Hamilton and Katie Dolan helped the Narragansett Boat Club youth women's 4x boat finish second in a very challenging field of competitors. The local girls — they are coached by Barrington resident Peter Wilhelm — proved they were the team to beat when they finished in first place in the time trial. The local rowers also came in first during the semifinals. In the finals, the Narragansett boat finished with the silver medal.
The youth nationals serve as the premier junior rowing event in the United States and host approximately 1,500 athletes representing 150 teams from across the country. The competitors are vying for national titles in 18 boat classes.
Mr. Wilhelm is a long-time volunteer coach who recently won the USRowing John J. Carlin Service award which honors an individual who has made significant and outstanding commitments in support of rowing.
