The Barrington High School community is celebrating a special Advanced Placement recognition.

According to an email from Barrington Superintendent of Schools Rob Wargo, the high school was recently named to the Advanced Placement (AP) School Honor Roll, earning “Gold” distinction. 

The AP School Honor Roll, which designates Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, is calculated each fall based on College Board data from the previous year’s graduating class. It recognizes schools that are committed to creating a college-going culture, providing students with opportunities to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness through academic rigor.

“The Gold distinction recognizes Barrington High School’s dedication to preparing our students for both college and careers,” Wargo wrote in the email. “Our AP performance during the 2023-2024 school year acknowledges the incredible amount of hard work our students and teachers put forth in the classroom every day.”

According to the email, 70 percent of the seniors in the BHS Class of 2024 took at least one AP exam during high school, and approximately 64 percent scored a three or higher on at least one AP exam. The email stated that 10 percent of the seniors in the Class of 2024 took five or more AP exams, including at least one in their freshman or sophomore year. 

“High school is a balancing act where students learn to manage their time and balance their coursework alongside the demands of extracurricular activities and social life,” Wargo wrote. “This phenomenal school-wide accomplishment reflects our students’ abilities to balance the rigorous academic demands of Advanced Placement courses with their engagement in athletics, community volunteering, leadership, and school organizations.”

Barrington High School does not require students taking AP courses to sit for AP exams. Also, the district allows all students to take AP classes.
