Barrington High School senior Adam Gorman was two strokes off the lead and the Barrington team stood in second place overall after Day 1 of the RI State Golf Championship at Cranston Country Club on Tuesday, May 28.

Barrington had a team score of 304, just two strokes behind the Day 1 leader LaSalle Academy.  East Greenwich was in third place with a team score of 311, while Hendricken was fourth at 314, Cranston West was fifth at 316, and Prout was fifth at 317. Moses Brown was in seventh place at 318, Coventry was in eighth at 326, North Kingstown was ninth at 330, and Pilgrim was tenth at 334.

In the boys competition, Barrington had four golfers make the cut. 

Gorman fired a 74 on the first day of the tournament. Prout’s Rocco Capalbo and LaSalle’s Drew Macleod each finished at 72, and Pilgrim’s Rich Cavanagh and Chariho’s Ian Dunham were a stroke back at 73.

Barrington’s Nolan Leonard carded a 77 on the first day of the tournament and was tied for 12th place overall.

Rocco DiMatteo, a sophomore at Barrington High School, finished with an 80, which put him in the top-30 overall, while BHS teammate Greg Fitta finished with an 82 and was tied for 37th. 

In the girls competition, Barrington had three golfers make the cut and finish in the top-five after Day 1 of the tournament. 

Claire McTaggart was in second place with a 75, while Lily Dessel was fourth. Dessel fired a 78 for the round. Emma Lockhart, a freshman at Barrington High School, had an 81 and was in fifth place.
