The Barrington High School baseball team, fueled by timely hitting and solid defense, defeated LaSalle 6-3 on Monday afternoon, April 18.

Senior Andrew LaPointe crushed a two-out triple to the centerfield fence and drove in two runs early in the game. The next batter, JC Neimeyer, roped a single to drive in LaPointe. That combination gave the Eagles an early lead that they never surrendered.

Ned Shapiro pitched four innings for Barrington, scattering five hits against a tough LaSalle lineup, and Matt Davis finished the game on the mound.

“That’s a big win for our program,” said Eagles Coach Vin Scandura. “I can’t remember the last time Barrington beat LaSalle… I’m proud of the guys. They really battled today.”

Barrington’s defense made a number of key plays. LaSalle threatened to score with one out and runners on first and third, but the Rams’ leadoff hitter popped up his bunt attempt, and the Eagles caught the pop-up and turned a double-play.

Meanwhile, Barrington hitters delivered at key moments. Harrison Cooley dropped a text-book bunt during a squeeze play, scoring Andy Fletcher from third base. That run gave the Eagles’ a 4-2 lead.

Scandura also praised LaPointe for his performance at the plate. The senior finished with two hits.

“He’s got tremendous power,” said the coach.

JT Celico had three hits in the victory, while Davis and Neimeyer also contributed to the offense.

The victory over LaSalle improved the Eagles’ record to 3-2 in Division I standings. Barrington also celebrated a 5-1 non-league win over Cranston West on Saturday, April 16. Cooley picked up the win on the mound, allowing just two hits in five innings of work. Davis, Celico and Nick Scandura each had RBI singles.

Barrington was scheduled to play at LaSalle on Wednesday, April 20.
