Barrington Middle School runners place at states

Evelyn LeFort finishes second overall in girls race

The Barrington Middle School cross country teams enjoyed successful championship meets last week.

At the division championships in Portsmouth on Friday, the Barrington boys team finished first and the Barrington girls team finished second in their respective races. Barrington’s Charlie Furtado finished first overall in the boys race, while Barrington’s Evelyn LeFort finished first overall in the girls race. Jack Lutrell took first in the boys JV race and Annabell Meech took first in the girls JV race.  

At the state championship meet at Deerfield Park in Smithfield on Sunday, the BMS boys team finished third overall. Barrington’s Brooks Mello finished fourth overall, followed by teammates Colby Napolitano, Austin McCarty, Charlie Furtado, Xavier Barako, Atharva Anantha Krishna, and Jack Lutrell. The BMS girls team finished fourth with strong performances by Evelyn LeFort (second place overall), Maura Gravina, Emma Pearse, Annabelle Meech, Grace Lunardelli, Estelle Mentzer, and Kate Pearse.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
