The Science Olympiad competition encourages students from around the country to study and excel in the field in science by having them compete in building events, with a focus on problem solving. This year, Barrington students proved that they are quite a group builders and problem solvers.
Last Saturday, the Barrington Middle School and Barrington High School participated in the Rhode Island Science Olympiad Tournament at Rhode Island College. Both teams had strong performances, and won state titles.
The Barrington Middle School team won their division with a score of 109 points in 22 events. Second place went to Our Lady of Mercy, which finished 147 points. (Scoring for the tournament was based on how teams placed in each event. First place in an event earned one point for the team, second place two points, and so on. Therefore, the team with the fewest points after the completion of all events is named the winner.)
Barrington's top contributors in the win were Eleanor Wind, Jaya Gottlieb, Alice Fisher, Jack Kelty, and Ethan Tutt, who all finished first in at least one event.
On the high school side, Barrington High School won the Division C tournament with a score of 63 in 19 events. Portsmouth finished in second place with 106 points. Barrington students finished first in 10 events.
Both the Barrington Middle School and Barrington High School teams have earned spots in the National Science Olympiad Competition next month at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
Both teams are excited for this opportunity and are looking forward to representing their schools and state on the national stage.
