Barrington’s Marketa Douglas could soon have her artwork displayed on the Google homepage.

The Barrington Middle School student is one of Google’s top five national finalists in the 13th annual Doodle for Google competition. Her artwork was selected as the winner in the 6-7 grade category; the contest is open to students in kindergarten through grade 12 across the United States. 

The theme for this year’s contest was “I am strong because…”

“My Doodle shows my grandma and I, connected by one of the only ways of communicating at this time,” Marketa said. “It’s meant to represent doing your best to be kind and stay strong for others, with the different symbols showing other places I see this strength every day.”

Marketa and the other national finalists will each win a $5,000 college scholarship, Google hardware, and fun Googley swag. The final stage of the Doodle for Google competition is to select which of the five finalists will have their artwork displayed on the Google homepage for 24 hours. That finalist will also receive a $30,000 scholarship and a $50,000 technology package for their school.
