Teacher Appreciation night capped with 81-46 victory

The Barrington High School boys basketball team treated the home crowd to a double-digit victory over North Kingstown, 81-46, on Wednesday night, Jan. 11.

Members of the varsity team also took time to honor their teachers during a special pre-game event.

Players presented teachers with thank-you notes, small gifts and then escorted them to designated court-side seats for the Division I showdown.

“First and foremost, Teacher Appreciation night was tremendous,” wrote Barrington Coach Mike Raffa. “Thank you Sara Colaneri Bonneau and Kate Fournier Coogan for all of your efforts to allow us to host the event and Mr. (George) Finn (BHS Director of Athletics) for conveying our appreciation to all of the teachers who have mentored, taught, inspired and motivated our student athletes.”

The players delighted their teachers with an inspired performance on the court. Barrington sprinted out to a 49-23 halftime lead and never looked back.

Matt Raffa scored 20 of his game-high 31 points in the first half.

“We prioritized defense, getting stops and having our defense create offense,” Coach Raffa wrote. “It allowed us to score 23 after the first quarter and 49 for the first half on our way to a 81-46 victory over North Kingstown.

“Dan Coogan and Owen Pfeffer were stoppers for us on ‘D.’”

The coach said each and every BHS player contributed to the win, and 11 out of the 12 players finished in the scoring column.

Raffa finished with 31 points, Nick Scandura scored 18, Sean Bonneau had seven and Spencer Proulx dropped in six. Coogan and Ryan Rigamonti scored four points each, Caleb Satisfield and Ryan Realejo finished with three points each, Matt Leonard and Colin McDermott had two points each, and Evan Anderson rounded out the scoring with a free throw.

“Congratulations to Ryan Realejo and Colin McDermott for scoring their first varsity points,” Coach Raffa wrote.

The Eagles improved to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in league play, and will host Portsmouth on Friday at 7 p.m.
