Barrington Schools recently hired a new Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction.
On Friday, the district announced that Ruth Corley was selected for the position. She also attended the Barrington School Committee meeting on Thursday night, Aug. 1.
“This decision is the result of an extensive search process that was led by a diverse committee of stakeholders from across the district and community, including teachers, special education and pupil personnel staff, building principals, and members of the district’s administrative team,” stated an email from Barrington Superintendent of Schools Rob Wargo. “Ms. Corley stood out to the search committee for her background in instructional development and assessment.”
According to the email, Corley holds degrees in American Studies, education, and educational leadership from Wesleyan University, San Francisco State University, and the University of California, Berkeley.
“Ms. Corley brings a wealth of educational leadership experience to this position, having previously served districts in Rhode Island and California as an educator, instructional reform facilitator, math specialist, instructional coach, and curriculum and instruction leader,” Wargo wrote. “Most recently, she was the Supervisor of PK-12 Math for the Providence Public Schools where she oversaw mathematics curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning for Providence’s 37 public schools.”
The email stated that the search committee was particularly impressed with Corley’s vision for Barrington Public Schools and her commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment in alignment with the district’s goals of academic excellence and empowerment for all students.
“We are confident that, as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, she will continue to build on the myriad strengths of our Barrington Public Schools,” Wargo wrote.
In an email to the Barrington Times, Corley described what makes her most excited about working in Barrington Public Schools.
“What motivates me as an educator, no matter what community I am working in, is an unwavering belief in the brilliance of our young people,” Corley wrote. “I am committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring access to an education that amplifies this brilliance and allows each student to thrive every day. We can only do this by building trusting relationships and working in partnership–students, families, educators, and the community. I am most excited about building these coalitions in service of our students.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve the students and families of Barrington alongside Superintendent Wargo and build upon the many existing strengths in the district.”
Corley is no stranger to the area, having grown up in Providence and worked recently in the city. She has also spent time running and riding through the East Bay.
“I am a runner and cyclist and you can find me often on the East Bay Bike Path,” Corley wrote. “I appreciate the natural beauty of Barrington, especially the shoreline. The town has also demonstrated a commitment to supporting families through high quality educational opportunities.”
