The Barrington High School Squash Club recently concluded its season with its third friendly match against neighboring St. Andrew’s School.

This final team match, which involved girls and boys, was made possible by St. Andrew’s School and its new squash facility. Barrington celebrated the senior members of the team: Max Sylvester, Brendan Jay, Leo Caldarella, Nolan Gaus, Gus Macauley, Ben McDermott, Owen Mullaly, and Jack Adams.

Squash has steadily enjoyed a resurgence in participation in Barrington. Both boys and girls attendance has inspired a healthy season of matches against Moses Brown, Lincoln and Squash Busters — SQB is a program that enriches the lives of inner-city youth by teaching them the importance of education, time management and commitment while at the same time challenging them to learn the game of squash.  

Barrington High School student-athletes Chloe Moscrop and Brendan Jay have helped manage the club and parents have filled in the gaps to support the team. The girls took it upon themselves to schedule a match against many of their friends from Lincoln School earlier in the season.  

Some of the members had never picked up a racquet while others like Barrington High School senior Owen Mullaly are ranked locally. Mullaly and fellow Barrington resident Nina Robertson have elected to give back their experiences on the squash courts by supporting and mentoring young adults involved in Squash Busters. Owen will attend Dennison University in the fall and plans to take his skills and compete at the college level. 

The Club Squash team was grateful to have had use of the courts at the Rhode Island Country Club where they are coached by teaching Club Pro Mike Riley, a wiley native of Manchester, England who has devoted his life to supporting, playing and refereeing the game at its highest level. He has the distinction of being one of just five certified World Squash Federation Referees, of which he is the only one in the United States.
