The pride that exudes from the ranks of the Bristol Fire Department was never more evident than it was on Sunday, June 9 when members of the Ever-Ready Engine & Hose Company No. 2 gathered in front of their fire station on Thames Street prior to the start of the annual Bristol Fireman’s Sunday Parade.
Founded on May 24, 1924, this particular company is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, but in actuality; the birth of this dedicated group of firefighters began in the mid-1800s.
According to the history books, “In 1846, the King Philip Fire Company Number 4 was founded, making it one of the oldest fire companies in this town’s proud history.” However, the Hydraulion Engine and Hose Company Number 1, which was first organized on May 11, 1836, during a town meeting and formally organized on July 22, 1843, resulted in it being the oldest fire company in Bristol. On November 13, 1988, the fire company moved to its present location at the corner of Annawamscutt Drive and Metacom Avenue.
Ever-Ready Fire Department Assistant Chief Dennis Cabral, has been a member of the department for 25 years and is as excited as anyone about the upcoming 100th anniversary banquet, which will be held Saturday, June 22, at the station, between 1 and 4 p.m.
“A special presentation will be made at the time,” said Chief Cabral, “including a citation from the Town Council and Town Administrator. This event is open to the general public.”
Chief Cabral said there will be a tour of the station “and there will be many photos for people to look at.” An anniversary book with lots of history is also being planned for the occasion.
Bristol Fire Chief Michael A. DeMello is also ecstatic with all of the hoopla surrounding this special Ever-Ready anniversary.
“One hundred years of service to the community is an exceptional milestone,” he said. “All members, past and present, should be proud of their contribution to the Ever Ready Company, the community, and the volunteer fire service.”
Town Administrator Steven Contente said the Ever-Ready Fie Station, like the three other fire stations in town, are something the town of Bristol can continue to be be proud of.
“The members of the Ever-Ready Company have been loyal in serving Bristol from their Thames Street station,” he noted. “The single engine and dedicated members are a huge part of Bristol s unique strength as a Town. I hope that many more generations continue the Ever-Ready legacy and grow as individuals as they contribute to their Town. Congratulations to the Ever-Ready’s and best wishes.”
