Barrington

Political platform statement

Why I am running for this office: I am running for Barrington Town Council to help our town responsibly navigate through the current recession as we simultaneously make progress on Barrington's walkability, affordability and vibrant village center. I will promote the use of renewable energy sources, improved climate resiliency and infrastructure. I have an uncompromising commitment to education, diversity and a community-wide sense of belonging. I believe we must be proactive in supporting our local small businesses, which have been exemplary in their response to the current crisis. I also see greater potential for the Bay Spring Community Center and, of course, the Belton Court / Zion property. I am grateful for the endorsements of NOW-RI, The Young Democrats of Rhode Island, and the Barrington Town Democratic Committee. I have nearly two decades of experience practicing law as a civil litigation attorney, successfully representing individuals in a wide range of matters. I am a former Congressional aide to Rep. John LaFalce (D-NY), consultant to several non-profits and co-founding board member of a progressive talk radio station. I currently serve on the Barrington Economic Development Commission and the board of a local youth sports nonprofit. I served on the Barrington Pride Flag Resolution Committee earlier this year. I received my JD from Cornell Law School with a Concentration in Public Law. I live in Barrington with my wife Melissa and our three sons, all students in Barrington Public Schools. I hope to have broad support within the community, will continue to seek input from everyone and look forward to meeting as many people as I can as I visit neighborhoods every weekend.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
