The Tiverton Planning Board is expected to conduct a preliminary plan review next week of a proposal for construction of a 2,960 square foot crematorium and chapel at 730 Main Road.
As it makes its way through the planning board approval process, the proposal is likely to generate pushback from some community members who have expressed to town officials that the northern part of town, where the new business will be located, is being subject to an unreasonable amount of commercial development.
Sakonnet Partners LLC originally presented its proposal to the board in December 2021. Minutes of that meeting show the company’s owner, Jonathan Ferreira, and Neal Hingorany of Narragansett Engineering briefly shared highlights of the project with the board as part of an informal concept plan review.
According to the minutes, the developer projected traffic impact would be minimal as only small groups are expected to assemble at the business at any given time. When board member Adam Rapoza asked about the decibel level of the furnace, Ferreira responded that the manufacturer indicated “it would be quiet and there would be no visible smoke created from the furnace.”
The property, which is in the General Commercial Zoning District and Neighborhood Business Overlay District, is in close proximity to a variety of commercial establishments, residential properties, and the Pocasset Hill Cemetery.
