Barrington's 12U football team battles back for win over Taunton

The Barrington Pop Warner 12U football team scored with less than three minutes remaining in the game, knocking off Taunton 18-14 in the season-opener on Saturday, Aug. 27. The game was played in front of a crowd at Barrington High School’s Victory Field.

The Eagles’ offense opened the game with a nice first quarter drive — Barrington had big gains from Colby Newton, Finn LoVerme, Eddie Wong, Gavin Quinn, Thayer Got and others. LoVerme completed a nice pass to Brady White that pushed the ball deep into Taunton territory. A turnover gave Taunton the ball, but a play later, Barrington’s Owen DiOrio put a hit on a Tigers’ running back and jarred the ball loose. Barrington recovered the fumble and a few plays later Wong barreled through the Taunton defense for his first touchdown of the game. Barrington missed the extra point, and the score was 6-0.

Barrington Head Coach Ty Paup praised the work of his offensive line throughout the game.

Taunton gained the lead in the second quarter on a long run, but Barrington battled back and put more points on the board when Jack Leduc followed some great lead blocks and raced into the end zone.

The Tigers carried a 14-12 lead late into the game.

With three minutes remaining, and facing a third down and 20, Barrington’s LoVerme dropped back and fired a pass to White. The sure-handed White hauled in the pass and then scampered for a key first down deep in Tigers’ territory. LoVerme also connected with Newton for another big gain, and with the clock running down, Wong took a hand-off and bolted around the left side of the Taunton defense for the go-ahead touchdown.

Barrington’s defense, paced by another nice tackle by DiOrio, held Taunton off the scoreboard for the remainder of the fourth quarter. Paup praised his entire defense, calling out DiOrio, Quinn, Leduc and others for stellar play.

Barrington’s 10U team and 14U team also played against Taunton on Saturday. Both Barrington teams battled hard, but came up short on the scoreboard. The Eagles will play at the East Bay Warriors this weekend.
