October is here and fall is in full swing. What better way to celebrate the autumnal season in all of its splendor than to get out in a rural setting and enjoy some local attractions and entertainment?

Frerichs Farm in Warren is playing host to two such events in the coming days, both of which should be worthy of a trip and fun for the whole family.

Giant pumpkins galore (and a famous, giant balloon)

The Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Growers will hold its 21st annual giant pumpkin weigh-off event at the farm on Saturday, Oct. 9 to see who can lay claim to the title of the region’s grandest gourds. It is back open to the public once more after being restricted due to COVID last year.

As an additional treat, RE/MAX River’s Edge will be setting up with one of its iconic, 70-foot-tall blimps at the farm, offering balloon rides (weather permitting) from 9-11 a.m. They will be offering the chance to view the weigh-off and the surrounding area from an unforgettable vantage point to raise donations for the David S. Frerichs Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund.

“We’re honored to help raise awareness and show support for such an incredible charity like the David S. Frerichs Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund.” said Michelle Cartwright, owner of RE/MAX River’s Edge. “As local community members we take pride in helping out wherever and whenever we can.”

Folk at the Farm

The Collaborative, a Warren-based nonprofit arts group, will bring a folk festival to Frerichs Farm on Sunday, Oct. 17 from 2-6 p.m.

“Folk at the Farm” will feature food from Warren eateries Metacom Kitchen and Hunky Dory, with beverages provided by Warwick’s Proclamation Ale Company and Rumford craft wine producer Anchor+Hope.

Live music will be provided by “high-caliber local artists including award-winning and internationally acclaimed folk duo Atwater-Donnelly, Irish-influenced duo Bank of Ireland, the soulful, tropical sounds of Carribean Jam Duo and high energy two steps and sultry waltzes from ‘New England’s hometown Cajun band’, Magnolia,” per a Collaborative press release.

“Events like this help bring the community together to share an experience while enjoying great music and local food and drink,” said Uriah Donnelly, Executive Director and Founder of The Collaborative. “This lineup is diverse and really has something for everyone. It’s great to be able to include so many Warren-based musicians as well. Both Atwater-Donnelly and Bank of Ireland call Warren home as does Magnolia’s Jack Ezikovich. It’s a real hometown affair!”

The festival is free for all to attend, but donations to The Collaborative are welcomed. A portion of proceeds will go to the David S. Frerichs Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets. The event will go on rain or shine.
