Admission is free on the final day of the Friends of the East Providence Public Library Fall Book Sale on Sun., October 16 from 1 to 5 p.m. Thousands of books will be available for $1 or less. Hard and soft cover books are $1, children’s 50¢, pocket-sized paperbacks are 50¢ and CDs, DVDs and audio books are $1. Books are easily accessible and are sorted in more than 50 categories; novels are in order by author’s last name. On sale are novels, vintage, collectible, recently released, author-signed, yearbooks, classics and books on business, health, sports, cooking and gardening. Also offered are books on science, history, art, film and more, as well as sheet music, comics and puzzles. Pay by cash or check only. Benefit East Providence Public Library. Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
