Frederick Ellsworth Wilkinson Jr., of Bristol, died peacefully and surrounded by family and friends Thursday, May 13, 2021, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, R.I.

Although born in San Diego, Calif., to the late Frederick and Mary (Baker) Wilkinson, he was a lifelong resident of Bristol.

Mr. Wilkinson was a proud and highly decorated veteran of the U.S. Army who served his country with honor and distinction. The army allowed him to experience other countries and cultures which, in turn, brought him to  Germany. It was his favorite station and country outside of the USA.

Fred enjoyed going to the Elks Club and being surrounded by fellow veterans. He was an active member of the Bristol VFW and the German American Clubs as well.

His memory will live on in his son, Sgt. Major Patrick A. Wilkinson USMC and his wife Jennifer of Oceanside, Calif., his daughter, Kristine S. McPherson of Swansea, Mass., his five grandchildren, Allie, Kylie, Meg, Hunter and Ryan, and many, many friends.

A chapel service will be held Monday, May 24, 2021, at 11:30 a.m., at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 21, 2021, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Smith Funeral Home, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI.

Arrangements are by Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
