EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School girls’ tennis team met neighbor Providence Country Day in a Division III contest at their shared home of the KendBrin Swim & Tennis Club in Riverside Wednesday, Oct. 6, the Knights sweeping the Townies by a 7-0 score.
The final tally was a bit deceiving with a trio of the matches going the three-set distance while a couple of others went deep into sets, but PCD eventually proved the better side during the outing.
The Knights’ Nos. 3 and 4 singles players, Caroline Demetrakis and Iris Petrillo, were near simultaneously off the court with the first points for PCD.
Demetrakis used her hard left-handed serve, when it found the range, and flat groundstrokes to defeat the Townies’ Emma Gilheeney 6-2, 6-2. Petrillo, who more regularly kept the ball in play, bettered E.P.’s Olivia Pannone 6-1, 6-3.
Gillheeney, at No. 4 singles, and Pannone, part of the Townies’ usual top doubles tandem, were playing up in the order due to the absence of Houn Kim at three singles.
PCD’s one doubles duo of Elois Wetherby and Braxton Andrade earned the third point of the afternoon for the Knights with their 6-2, 6-4 win over E.P.’s Katelyn Furtado and Caroline Haggerty.
The Knights next seemingly secured the overall match win when their No. 3 tandem of Livia Greenberg and Nora Calhoun walked off the court with a three-set win over the Townies’ Natalie Hughes and Maggie Robinson, but a scoring error sent the teams back out for a bit more action.
In between, PCD’s Casey Hunt finished off the Townies’ Jaelyn DaSilva 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 at one singles to earn the fourth and match-winning point. Hunt’s heavier groundies were the difference.
Greenberg and Calhoun shortly thereafter completed their 6-2, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5) win.
At second doubles, PCD’s Yutong Li and Sophia Sodhi were three-set winners (6-3 in the third) over the Townies’ Isabella Hurley and Paris Martin.
The last match off the court was the three-set win by the Knights’ Marguerite Cuzzone over E.P.’s Lena Shanty 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Cuzzone was a bit more consistent than Shanty, putting away points better than her opponent when the opportunities were presented.
PCD improved to 4-5 in the D-III standings with the win. East Providence dropped to 2-5 at the time.
