Good news kids, school year is ending one day early in Barrington

Juneteenth holiday had created a split before last day of classes

Summer vacation will start earlier than expected for Barrington students this year.

Members of the Barrington School Committee approved a change to the school calendar during their meeting on Thursday, Oct. 10. The change shifted the last day of school from June 20, 2025 to June 18, 2025.

School officials had been wrestling with the end-of-the-year calendar. When it was first released, the calendar showed that the last day of school was supposed to be June 20. However, the district was also set to observe the Juneteenth holiday on June 19, meaning that students would be in school on June 18, out of school on June 19, and then expected to come back to class for one more day on June 20. Officials worried that most students would likely skip school that day.

On Thursday night, Barrington Superintendent of Schools Rob Wargo announced that the state had approved a petition to move Barrington’s last day of school to June 18.

Wargo said prior Superintendent Michael Messore had earlier asked the state Department of Education for permission to not have students attend school on June 20. Wargo said he recently heard back from the state that they had approved the request.

The new calendar, which was approved 5-0 by the School Committee, lists June 18 as the last day of classes in Barrington.

“I’m just happy to see this happen,” said Barrington School Committee member Frazier Bell.

Wargo explained that the state determined Barrington students will have met the sufficient number of hours for the school year. He said Barrington teachers will be required to work on June 20.

The superintendent cautioned that the calendar could shift again, depending on inclement weather days. The district has built in two inclement weather days or snow days. If there is a need to take a third snow day this year, the students would need to make up one more day, Wargo said.

Barrington School Committee member Dr. Megan Douglas explained that a few years ago, officials made a shift to extend each school day by five minutes.
