BRISTOL — The Mt. Hope High School soccer clubs split a doubleheader played in town at the Vendituoli Complex Thursday night, Sept. 19.

In the opener, the Huskies dropped a 3-1 decision to their guests from Portsmouth in a Division I clash. Mt. Hope saw its record level at 3-3-0 in the league standings while the Patriots improved to 2-1-1.

Emma Goglia scored the lone goal for the locals with an assist from Sara Nencka. The tally came in the second half in a game when the hosts had looks on net, but Mt. Hope head coach Kerri Giarusso said her Huskies " just couldn't finish tonight."

Mt. Hope next plays on the road Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Lincoln High. Kickoff is 6 p.m. The Huskies return home for a game against Cranston West Thursday night, Sept. 26, also scheduled for a 6 o'clock start.

The news was better for the hosts in the nightcap as the Mt. Hope boys ran their unbeaten streak at the start of the 2024 season to seven after the Huskies defeated visiting Westerly, 4-1, in a Division II outing.

Diego Gonzalez, from Mohsin Khan, Maddox Canario from Aidan Pereria, Aidan Hudak, from Thomas Levis, and Levis, from Canario, accounted for the Mt. Hope goals. Keeper Cole Tavares recorded five saves.

The locals never trailed, taking a 2-nil lead to intermission. The Bulldogs scratched one back in the 70th minute, before the hosts slam the door shut with two more tallies in quick succession.

The Huskies, who were coming off a 2-0 victory on the road against West Warwick, improved to 4-0-3 in the D-II standings with the win. In their previous outing against the Wizards, Canario had a brace, potting both of the Mt. Hope tallies. Miguel Ferraz had a helper. Evan Garies was credited with six saves in net for the Huskies.

Mt. Hope remains at home for its next encounter, welcoming Hope to campus Tuesday night, Sept. 24, for a 6 o'clock kick. The Huskies then travel to Tiverton Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.
