A Rhode Island classic, jonnycakes (or johnnycakes) are thick or thin cornmeal pancakes depending on what part of the Ocean State you’re in. In Rhode Island’s South County, they like them thick and crunchy. Come celebrate all things johnnycake at Coggeshall Farm this Saturday, Sept. 9. Visitors can see the flourishing corn crop, play corn-themed games, grind corn by hand, and watch cooking demonstrations in the historic farmhouse.
Harry Here Farm from Exeter, R.I., will be onsite to demonstrate their corn grinding process and will be selling some of their RI White Cap Flint Corn jonnycake mix. Gnarly Vines Farm will also be on-site making jonnycakes for sale for guests to taste.
Coggeshall Farm has been growing White Cap Flint Corn from seed donated by Harry Here Farm in Exeter, R.I. With a rich history dating back to the Narragansett tribes, this unique heirloom maize thrives in our historic gardens. Nestled amongst the beans, pumpkins, and squash, the corn has taken off and become a staple of beauty in the garden. This variety does more than just look good; White Cap Flint Corn is the official corn of Rhode Island jonnycakes. The art of making jonnycakes has been passed down through families and communities, each infusing the recipe with their own Rhode Island distinct touch. No matter what recipe, it all has to be made with the same heritage breed to be officially called a Rhode Island jonnycake.
Jonnycake Day is included with standard daytime admission ($10 for adults, $5 for youth ages 4-17) or with Coggeshall Farm Museum membership or Old Sturbridge Village membership.
