During a recent family gathering, John said, “I think I am the most fortunate man in the world.” He loved nothing more than family, traveling and a bag of Peppermint Patties.

John passed away peacefully at home in Venice, Florida, at age 93, surrounded by family. Born in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., in 1928 to Anthony John and Mary Anna Meehan Milano, he grew up in Pelham alongside his sister, Theresa, affectionately called “Sis”.

After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, John put himself through night school while raising a family and working two jobs.

John was a great husband, parent, and lifelong friend. On his last day on earth he spoke to his best friend of more than 50 years, Frank Reilly. A kind, genuine, humble man, John always made you feel like you were the most important person in the room.

Widowed three times, he embraced each family equally. He never missed a birthday, graduation or wedding. If one of his family was having a life moment, John “Pop Pop” was there.

An adventurous world traveler, John rode his bike 100 miles in Moab, trekked in South Africa, rode the rapids in the Grand Canyon, and watched the America's Cup in New Zealand.

Professionally, John worked as an electrical engineer at Long Island Lighting Company (Lilco) for 38 years. After retiring, he went on to serve as Deputy Administrator for the State of Rhode Island Public Utilities, and served on many community boards. He was still working at Tidewell Hospice Thrift Shop in Venice, Florida when he died.

John survived his three loves: Dorothy Grattan, Patsy Ann Keegan and Ann Marie Krushnowski. He dearly loved his 13 children: Patty, Fran, Tom, Peggy, Karl, Mary, Joe, Eric, Mike, Ann, Pete, Johna and Robert. He had 19 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held in Bristol, Rhode Island on June 18, 2022, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Bristol, Rhode Island. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Tidewell Hospice at www.tidewellhospice.org and Unbound at www.unbound.com.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
