Both Husky clubs complete their first halves with impressive unbeaten marks

BRISTOL/WARREN — The respective Kickemuit Middle School soccer clubs reached the midpoint of their 2024 schedules with impressive results and records.

The KMS girls won their first five games in dominant fashion, including a 6-0 victory over former fellow unbeaten Portsmouth Friday afternoon, Sept. 27, in an outing played at Mt. Hope. Also on the high school campus last Friday, the KMS boys completed their first half with a similarly notable 3-0-2 mark after the locals an 8-1 win over visiting Thompson of Newport.

More girls' notes
The Huskies authored up mostly dominating results through their opening stretch of games on the girls' side.

KMS won each of its first four outings by the same 10-0 scores. While there is no formal goal-scoring rule, like the "10-Run Rule" used in baseball and softball in one-sided games, KMS head coach Katie Golden said the locals have stopped scoring at 10 out of respect and a sense of sportsmanship for the opposition.

The Huskies' eighth-grade captains Brooke Avila and Maya Goglia are the team's leading scorers and "dynamic duo in the midfield," according to Golden, who's staff includes Thea Brum and Leah Oliver. Golden also made mention of another eighth grader, Alaina Enes, for her all-around contributions to the squad.

Avila has scored 11 goals through four games, Mya Salvatore seven, Goglia and Makenna Butterworth six each and Enes five. Julia Morrisette, Julia Fox, Kristina Labao, Mia Delmage and Macy Brodd have netted one each.

The staunch KMS defensive backfield includes Charlotte Loftus, Olivia Overy, Emma Silva and Flynn Hancock in front of starting keeper Ava Pereira.

"Our team is incredibly talented, especially for their ages, and with such a deep bench it allows us to really maintain the intensity and get fresh legs in when we need to make a sub," Golden added. "We're all very excited to see how far we can take this talent and momentum throughout the rest of the season and hopefully achieve a championship at the end of it."

Against the then-unbeaten Patriots to close last week, KMS scored the game's first goal early in the contest and dominated the run of play, but didn't break it open until the season half. Avila and Salvatore scored twice each. Enes and and starting midfielder Genevieve Rolando had one a piece. Pereira was credited with eight saves.

More boys' notes
The Huskies opened up with a 4-1 win over Gaudet Middle School of Middletown. Gabe Neagle and Mason Reis each scored twice for the locals. Keeper Andrew Vieira made four saves.

KMS next defeated Martin of East Providence, 5-1. Neagle had another brace. Reis, Aiden Medeiros and Kobe King accounted for the other goals. Vieira was credited with three saves.

Medeiros had the lone goal for the Huskies in their 1-1 draw with Riverside, also of East Providence. Vieira was busier in the six-yard box, making eight saves.

The locals also played level with Portsmouth, 1-1. Colin Kiselka scored the goal off an assist from Dominic Oliveira. Vieira was credited with four saves.

Besides his forwards and midfielders in his 4-4-2 formation, KMS boys' head coach Jeff Motta also credited the play of his defensive backfield including in the center Matt Williams and Tyler Motta and on the edges Jack Friese and Dylan Cote.

"This is a really talented group of kids. I think they're playing really excellent soccer," Motta added. "Their ball control and how they play around the field I think shows their passion for the game. They've gotten better as the years has gone along. They're playing really well."

Late last week, the Huskies scored early and often in their seven-goal win over their guests from Newport. In order, KMS's tallies were scored by Oliveira, Kiselka with an assist Motta, Kiselka assisted by Oliveira, Medeiros, Neagle, King, Austin Armillotto assisted by Toeves and finally Toeves unassisted. Keepers saves were one Vieira, two for Cody Matos and one for Zeke Taraves.
