Leonard Charles Patterson, 55, of Warren, R.I., died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Providence, he was the son of Mrs. Jeanne T. Patterson and the late Charles E. Patterson. He was a mason for Santa’s Helper and Al Tavares’s Masonry in Warren, and also worked at A New Leaf in Providence.

Besides his mother, he leaves his brothers, Alan C. Patterson (Jill) of Warren, Thomas C. Patterson (Susan) of Swansea, MA, Timothy C. Patterson (Dawn) of Warren, and Charles J. Patterson (Jane) of Seekonk; and his sisters, Anne Marie Motta (John) of Warren, Rose Marie Sylvia (James) of Niantic, CT, Kathleen Sarasin (Tim) of Warren, Janet S. Mello (James) of Windham, ME, Theresa M. DeRiso (Stephen) of Barrington, Nancy George of Warwick and Tina M. Avila (Michael) of Bristol. He was a kind uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, where services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Jean Baptiste Church. Interment followed in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to support the needy at St. Jean Baptiste Outreach (formerly St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Society), 645 Main Street, Warren, RI 02885. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
