Leonardo Inacio Matos, 70, of Bristol

Leonardo Inacio Matos, 70, of Claremont Avenue passed away on February 14th. Born in Sao Mateus, Pico Azores, he was the son of the late Jose and Francisco (Sousa) Matos.  He was the husband of Mary Olga (Goulart) Matos; father of Leonardo Matos Jr., Dennis Matos and Mark Matos; grandfather of Shawn Matos, Courtney Matos, Cody Matos, Juliana Matos and Chelsea Matos.

He was employed as a boat builder at Pearson Yachts in Portsmouth for 20 years before retiring.  He was a member of the Santissima Trindade, the Portuguese Independent Band Club and the Don Luiz Filipe Association.

His funeral services were held February 18th from the George Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Luis Dutra at St. Elizabeth Church. Liturgical readings and the Prayer of the Faithful were by Josselyn De Lemos and Joseph De Lemos.  The offertory gifts were presented by Shawn Matos, Courtney Matos, Juliana Matos and Chelsea Matos. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Joseph De Lemos, Oscar De Lemos, Claudio Bento, John Puniello, Jonathan De Lemos and Steve Sousa.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
