To the editor:
I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Warren Department of Public Works for their diligent efforts in restoring the damaged 19th-century crosswalk on the corner of Linden and Washington.
The significance of these crosswalks, which were once ubiquitous throughout the waterfront district, cannot be overstated. They served as vital pathways for commercial handcarts and helped mitigate the impact of mud from pedestrians' clothing. These crosswalks made of cobbles, bluestone and granite are reminders of a much different time and are unique to Warren in that they have survived when most have been lost or destroyed.
By investing time and resources into the restoration of this historic crosswalk, the Warren Department of Public Works has demonstrated a commitment to preserving our town's heritage and ensuring that future generations can appreciate the rich tapestry of our past.
Once again, I extend my sincerest thanks to the Warren DPW for their dedication to maintaining and honoring our town's history.
