Letter: Please wear orange for Gun Violence Awareness

Posted

On May 5, 2021, the Bristol Town Council unanimously adopted a Proclamation declaring June 4, 2021, as National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Bristol. According to the Gun Violence Archive in Washington, in the three weeks after the Proclamation was adopted, 1,318 people were killed and 2,465 injured by gun violence in the United States. On May 13, Providence experienced the largest shooting in their history when nine people were shot in the Washington Park area.

To mark the day, we ask that Bristolians please wear orange on June 4, to recognize Gun Violence Awareness Day. The only way to slow this epidemic is to work together, and it starts with awareness.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
