To the editor:

Bristol has lost a giant, not the first great man or woman to pass who has contributed greatly to our town. There have been many and Mike Brynes has a place with them. He is among the individuals who have given much in the way of public service, contributing to the great legacy of Bristol itself.

Mike served his community as he did our country for many years, resisting in retirement the honored title he earned of General. He was just plain Mike to so many of us. He and I worked together, along with other citizens on several fronts, including hospitality. We were often guided by Mike’s vision and talents in marketing our town to the outside world, enhancing visitors to come discover and experience the unique charm of Bristol. Mike well understood Bristol’s treasures because he helped cultivate them.

Mike and I did not always agree. There were social-political issues in which we were far apart. We knew that. We also knew from a deep respect for each other, to maintain what we believed in and leave such issues away from the conversation. It was not always easy, but we found mutual enjoyment in that our passions and the belief in our town could be shared and enjoyed.

I will miss Mike, and I know others will also.
