Letter: Shaping sustainable growth

To the editor:

We are proud to announce that Save Bettencourt Farm has transitioned into “Warren Citizens for Appropriate Development.” Our organization remains a grassroots movement whose mission is to empower the residents of Warren to promote sustainable development while preserving our town's unique character without overwhelming our natural resources and infrastructure.

As Warren Citizens for Appropriate Development, we will continue to advocate for responsible growth that enhances the quality of life for all Warren residents. We represent workers, business owners, retirees, parents, and individuals, all deeply committed to maintaining the charm and uniqueness of our town so that it can be enjoyed by future generations. We seek to partner with our community leaders in shaping development and affordable housing policies that honor Warren's values and priorities.

Our initial efforts are centered on addressing the proposed Settlers Green development at Bettencourt Farm on Kinnicutt Avenue. We are sensitive to the need for more local housing options, particularly affordable ones. However, we believe that any development in this location must be in harmony with East Warren’s rural characteristics and infrastructure and must not compromise the integrity of our natural environment, particularly our open spaces and the Kickemuit River.

The Settlers Green project is at odds with a number of values our community has embraced. The scale and aesthetic are out of step with the established character in this part of town. Moreover, the project's potential impact on the town’s infrastructure, school system, emergency services, pedestrian and vehicular safety, natural ecosystems, animal habitats and the Kickemuit River — a vital ecological and recreational resource — cannot be ignored. If we allow this type of development to be built in this location as proposed, we risk eroding the very things that make Warren special.

As Warren Citizens for Appropriate Development, we are committed to working collaboratively with developers, local officials, and fellow residents to find solutions that promote responsible growth while preserving the beauty and history of our town. We believe that by allowing space for evolving conversations and advocating for thoughtful planning, we can achieve a future where development enhances Warren's unique charm and vitality and where we can remain a Yankee Magazine Best Place to Live.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
