EAST PROVIDENCE — As much grief as the Rhode Island Department of Transportation has garnered for its handling of the Washington Bridge project, its effort a mile or so up the Seekonk River reconstructing the Henderson Bridge continues to proceed on time and without much if any drama.
The latest point of progress takes place as the current week comes to a close when RIDOT plans to open a new segment of the roundabout near the providing direct connection to North Broadway.
The roughly quarter-mile stretch will be available to motorists for the first time in some two years by Friday afternoon, May 31, prior to that evening's rush hour.
Access to and from the bridge will gained from the old Henderson Expressway and is the final leg of the roundabout to open.
New construction will continue through 2024, involving mostly the demolition of the old bridge completed in 1969. Final completion of the reconstruction of the $84.4 million project is expected in summer 2025.
The new Henderson Bridge opened for traffic in November 2023. A portion of the old bridge, originally deemed structurally deficient in the mid-1990s, remained open when project began in January of 2021.
