PORTSMOUTH — Just two weeks after he shattered a 42-year-old Portsmouth High School running record, Kaden Kluth improved on another school best during a home meet on Monday.
Competing against East Providence, Kluth won the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:50.3, breaking the previous PHS record of 8:56.0, set by John Kelly in 1982.
“Credit to (Kelly) for a pretty remarkable 40-year run with that record,” head coach Shaun Horgan said. “Kaden knew he had a shot at it, and he's been really training hard for it. He's setting himself up for an amazing finish to his career here at PHS. It's been a lot of fun so far and he's got his sights on the big races coming up in May and June.”
Kluth also won the 1,500 meters Monday in a time of 4:36.4, and was part of the winning 4x400-meter relay team (along with John McGraw, Jeff Brady, and Kevin Sullivan), which finished in 3:42.6.
On April 11, Kluth set a new school record in the 800 meters, running a 1.55.7 to break a record set by Jim Burton in 1980.
Portsmouth scored 94 points as a team to East Providence’s 56, and the team is now 5-2 on the season.
Other first-place finishers were:
• Colby Fahrney — 100 meters (11.6 seconds); and long jump (20 feet, 4 inches)
• Maciej Tabak — 110 hurdles (18.5 seconds)
• Jeff Brady — 400 meters (52.1 seconds)
• Kevin Sullivan — 800 meters (2:13.5)
• Nikolai Loyola — high jump (5 feet, 8 inches)
• Landon Rodrigues — triple jump (37 feet, 11 inches)
• Harrison Goodfriend — pole vault (7 feet)
“Brady is going to be a contender in the 400 statewide. He's got a whatever-it-takes mentality. I'm just really impressed with his progress,” Horgan said.
