Girls win, boys lose

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High girls’ varsity swim team beat Westerly at Roger Williams University on Friday, improving its record to 2-1 in Division II.

The 53-27 victory featured two first-place wins by Honorah Dougherty in the 500 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, as well as three other race wins.

“We had a few girls missing, so we swam some events that were not the norm for most,” said head coach Evan Denard. “Katie Yalanis had a great meet, dropping 10 seconds in her 200 (intermediate relay) and another four seconds in the 100 breaststroke. Maggie Lauder also had a great meet, dropping two seconds in the 50 free and 30 seconds in the 500 free.”

Here are the first-place finishers among the girls’ team:

• 200 free: Bella Barber, 2:19.07

• 200 intermediate relay: Ella Gilpin, 2:29.38

• 500 free: Honorah Dougherty, 6:27.92

• 100 backstroke: Honorah Dougherty, 1:11.39

• 200 free relay: Honisty Baker, Morgan Pattison, Katie Yalanis, and Ella Gilpin, 2:18.16

The boys, also in Division II, didn’t fare as well, losing to Westerly by a score of 21-52.

“They are now 0-1,” said Denard. “We are an extremely small team this year, with five boys on the roster. Our focus is on individual improvement and performance. With that being said, we had four first-place finishers.”

Marc Alcolea Vila had an amazing meet, the coach said. “He came from behind in the 100 free to win in a time of 54.25, a personal record by three seconds and qualifying for the State Championship meet. He then followed this up with a win in the 100 backstroke, dropping another second and also qualifying for states. Tyler Butler was another swimmer who had a great meet. He dropped six seconds in the 100 free and 2.5 seconds in the 100 breaststroke.

The first-place finishers among the boys’ team were:

• 200 intermediate relay: Lucas Requena, 2:31.47

• 100 free: Marc Alcolea Vila, 54.25

• 100 backstroke: Marc Alcolea Vila, 1:04.93

• 100 breaststroke: Lucas Requena, 1:14.77

The girls’ and boys’ team were scheduled to compete on the road against Cranston East on Tuesday, Jan. 16, before hosting Classical at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19.
