One city-based side got its Ron Silva/Little League District 2 Minor Baseball Division tourney run going, while another got its first win of the event as play resumed Tuesday night, July 9, following a break for the Fourth holiday.

Rumford started play in the Silva tournament with an 11-6 win in Portsmouth. And the East Providence Central, which lost to Bristol/Warren in its opener two weeks ago, shut out of host Little Compton/Tiverton by a 12-0 count.

More Rumford notes
Rumford used 28 stolen bases on the night to help score some of its runs. The locals broke a scoreless deadlock with four runs in the top of the third. Rumford then added five in the top of the fourth. Landon Mello had a run-scoring single and Kingston Deleon-Spitalieri ripped a two-run double. Andrew Mitchell plated the final pair for the locals with a single to center in the top of the sixth.

Charlie Costantino threw two innings as the starting pitcher for Rumford then finished the game by catching the final four frames. Deleon-Spitalieri threw one scoreless inning. Mason Ferreira ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth, but responded by striking out the side in the fifth on just 14 pitches.

Andrew Mitchell closed out the win in the sixth. Costatino threw out the lead runner on an attempted steal of third. Mason Ferreira made a fine play going into the hole, then assisting on the final out of the game with a strong throw to first.

More EP Central notes
EP Central also used the stolen base to its advantage while scoring a dozen runs in its victory over Little Compton/Tiverton.

Rowan Perry was an all-around standout for the locals. On defense, he had two put-outs at second base. On offense, he went 2-for-2 with a triple and a double while driving in a pair.

Gabriel Noriega had a terrific outing on the mound, tossing a one-hitter on 63 pitches through four innings. He struck out nine.

Up next
Both local entries are back in action Sunday night, July 14, with first pitches at 5:45.

Rumford hosts Warren at the Rock Complex while EP Central is home to Portsmouth at Pierce Field.
