Locals rally to defeat Barrington twice for the title

EAST PROVIDENCE — It was rallies all around in recent days for the Rumford Little League AAA Division Baseball All-Stars as the locals not only responded with the win required but also came from behind in the process to capture the 2024 Ron Silva/District 2 Tournament title with a 10-9, extra-inning victory over visiting Barrington Monday night, July 29, at the Rock Complex.

Rumford actually entered the new week needing to defeat previously unbeaten Barrington twice in the double-elimination event to claim the championship. The locals got the first win on the road Sunday, July 28, by a 6-4 count.

The next evening, Rumford began the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Barrington answered immediately with four in the top of the second take the lead. The visitors then added a pair in the third to give themselves a 6-2 advantage.

The hosts got one back in the bottom of the third, but again Barrington was able to match to hold a 7-3. The guests then made it 8-3 with yet more tally in the top of the fifth to put Rumford on the edge of defeat. And when the locals couldn't score in the bottom of the inning things looked bleak.

Down to their last at-bat, however, Rumford's response began when Kingston Deleon-Spitaleri led off with a walk and scored when Jack McBurney tripled to follow. But the next two batters made outs before Andrew Mitchell drove in McBurney with the second run of the inning. Lucia Pedroso-Jones singled  as did Gabe Yaffe next up to load the bases. Elijah Cabral's grounder was then misplayed allowing two more runs to come around. Yaffe then stole home to tie it.

In the seventh inning, Barrington used a base hit and a pair of steals in the top half to bring home the go-ahead run.

Rumford's Charlie Costantino, who was the winning pitcher after throwing four frames in relief, avoided any further damage by striking out the final hitter of the frame. He was hit by a pitch to lead off for Rumford in the bottom of the seventh.

Mason Ferreira was hit by a pitch as was Deleon-Spitaleri to load the bases. McBurney drew a free pass to force in the tying tally. One out later, Landon Melo singled to right to bring Ferreira in with the championship-winning run.

The 2024 District 2 AAA Baseball Division champion Rumford team roster included Elijah Cabral, Landon Melo, Cal Connolly, Andrew Mitchell, Charlie Costantino, Owen O'Reilly, Kingston Deleon-Spitaleri, Finn Park-Schoener, Mason Ferreira, Lucia Pedroso-Jones, Jack McBurney V and Gabe Yaffe. John McBurney was the manager with coaches Evan Costantino, Shaun Jones, Kiel Mitchell, Mike Ferreira and Dave Melo.
