PORTSMOUTH—The Roger Williams Women's rugby team won the Division II Beast of the East cup championship by crushing University of Albany 38-5 at Glen Farm in Portsmouth on Sunday. The RWU girls had won the D III title two years in a row and had moved up a division in 2017. “The girls pushed themselves all winter, through a new strength and training program that we implemented,” said coach Kevin Merola, adding, “They came out in top physical condition this year and it really showed through the tournament,” he said.
On Saturday the RWU women crushed Vermont in their first match 50-12 and blanked RPI 24-0. In the playoffs they skunked University of New Haven 71-0, and beat PC 26-19 to gain the finals.
