EAST PROVIDENCE — With the start of the 2023-24 term quickly approaching next month, the administration is alerting families of changes to the daily schedule and calendar expected to or having already taken place.
At the School Committee's July 11 meeting, Superintendent Dr. Sandra Forand alerted the body and the public of a Rhode Island Department of Education decree notifying districts they must revise their calendar in anticipation of the 2024 election.
The date for the Presidential primary in Rhode Island is Tuesday, April 2. There will be no school for all districts around the state.
The superintendent said this will extend the term by one day to Friday, June 14, barring any other cancellations.
In addition, as proposed in the current framework on a new collective bargaining agreement between the unions and the School Department, Forand said an extra 10 minutes of educational time each day has been tentatively approved.
If and when the sides have a finalized pact, the superintendent said the daily timeframe for each level would be as follows: high school, 7:25 a.m.-1:55 p.m.; middle school, 7:55 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; and elementary, 8:40 a.m.-3:10 p.m.
The first day of classes for the '23-24 term is Tuesday, Aug. 28. There is no school on Monday, Sept. 4, Labor Day. The year begins in earnest on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
The Thanksgiving recess is Nov. 22-24. The Christmas break runs from Dec. 22-Jan. 1 with classes resuming on Tuesday, Jan. 2.
February vacation is week of Feb. 18. The April break is the week of April 14. And, again, the last day of school is now June 14.
