The East Providence High School softball team fell out of the Division I state championship playoffs over the last week after dropping a pair of games in the double-elimination event.

Host Cumberland brought the Townies' 2023 season to a closer following a 1-0  defeat of EPHS Tuesday afternoon, June 6.

The Clippers plated the game's lone run in the bottom of the fourth. Reily Austin singled and later scored on a Briana Grenier hit.

Cumberland's Caroline Lanzi out-dueled EPHS ace Keira Quadros over seven innings to keep the Clippers alive.

Lanzi allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out 10 en route to the win. She also hit a batter.

Quadros was nearly as dominant in her six frames in the circle. She gave up only three hits and one walk while also fanning 10.

Previously, seventh-seeded EPHS, who bested Chariho in its Division I softball opener earlier last week, traveled to Cranston West Thursday, June 1, where the Townies lost 5-2 in first game in the double-elimination main draw of the state tourney.

The host Falcons scored twice in the bottom of the third inning to break a 2-2 tie en route to a 5-2 victory. West had taken a quick 2-0 lead, scoring two in the home half of the first. The second seeds added another tally in the fourth.

East Providence plated a pair of runs in the second inning to level the score, but couldn't touch West pitcher Paige Cote for any more runs the rest of the way. The Falcons' hurler allowed three hits. Both of the EP runs were earned.

The Townies' season came to a close with an 11-10 record in league games, 13-10 overall.
