Nancy Tavares has resigned from her Westport School Committee post, opening the door for a joint school committee/select board appointment to the vacant seat.
Tavares, who was elected to the school committee in 2014 and was last re-elected in June 2020, was two thirds of her way through her three-year term when she submitted a letter of resignation on Friday, July 13. There was no explanation included in her resignation letter.
Westport residents interested in filling the vacant seat can contact the town clerk's office and the school committee. At Monday night's Select Board meeting, chairwoman Shana Shufelt said the select and school boards will hold a joint meeting at some point after Friday, Aug. 26, at which they will appoint a resident to fill the open seat. That person would serve the remainder of Tavares' term, which is set to expire next Spring.
Shufelt said she would work with school committee members to come up with a date for that joint meeting.
